Baycrest - two clowns

Toronto Rehabilitation Institute

Therapeutic Clown Study

For three months we filmed therapeutic clowns for a research study. The study was headed by Dr. Pia Kontos of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and filming took place at a long-term care hospital in Toronto.

The study’s goal was to observe and measure the effects of therapeutic clowing with patients of dementia. We filmed, in the most inconspicuos way, pairs of clowns as they interacted with the patients, capturing the slightest response nuances for the researchers’ benefit. The resulting footage was analyzed by a team of researchers and also screened at health conferences around the world.

Note: Due to confidentiality, clips of the project showing patients can not be shown.

The Royal Conservatory

Training videos – The Achievement Program

“The Achievement Program”, a branch of The Royal Conservatory, required a video training tool to assist adjudicators with examinations methods and protocols.

True Connections Video Productions created a set of 56 videos ranging in duration from 15 to 50 minutes and featured students from levels 1 through 10. In some cases, we used split-screen and picture-in-picture to convey the interaction between the examiner and the student and to demonstrate instrument techniques. Examinations of various levels were filmed for instruments such as violin, piano, cello, guitar, saxophone, flute, trombone, tuba as well as voice.

We also created videos featuring music teachers/examiners describing instrument terminology, and techniques as it relates to examinations.

Note: Due to confidentiality, clips of the project showing the examiners and students can not be shown.

Paula Wolfson – Performer

Performance showcase

Dora Award-winner Paula Wolfson has a one-woman cabaret show that brings an audience behind-the-scenes in pursuit of a career in show business. Paralleling the search for love with the search for work in the theatre – the perils of both pursuits have more in common than you think! This one-woman show is audience interactive, with something for everyone among the musical selections – from Broadway to popular Canadian musical theatre, ’60s pop to contemporary.

True Connections Video Productions was asked to capture the essence of the show and to provide a promotional video showcasing Paula’s many talents. To do so, we literally went behind-the-scenes with Paula and interviewed her in her dressing room getting ready for her show. By inter-cutting between her backstage self and her on-stage self, this video allows us all to fall in love with Paula Wolfson!

Louise Russo W.A.V.E.

W.A.V.E. Empowering Youth Day

On April 21, 2004, Louise Russo, mother of three, was an innocent victim of gun violence. Caught in the cross fire at a local sandwich shop, she was paralyzed from the chest down, and tragically lost the use of both of her legs.

Louise is the founder of Louise Russo W.A.V.E. – Working Against Violence Everyday (www.louiserussowave.ca ), an initiative that is centered on principles of Respect, Responsibility and Role of Leadership. Its goal is to inspire young people and members of the community to take action, make positive choices and initiate projects to make their schools & communities a safer place to live, learn & play.

The W.A.V.E Empowering Youth Day was an inspirational event held at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga on May 16, 2012 that presented motivational speakers, engaging entertainers, and presented Youth and Leadership Awards to young people who are making a difference in their schools and communities.

True Connections Video Productions captured the event from start to finish with the aim to convey the theme and messages from the event – essentially Youth inspiring Youth.

Minden Gross LLP

Irvin Schein – bio

Minden Gross, a prominent law firm in Toronto enlisted the services of True Connections Video Productions to create a short “biography/promotional” video for one of its lawyers, Irvin Schein.

The video’s goal was to intruduce Irvin as a solid lawyer, while still presenting him as approachable, caring and personable. The video clearly accomplished this goal.

Again, suitable music was carefully selected to fit the mood and message of the video. As always, the synchronization of the music to the the visuals accentuates the message to create the most impactful delivery.

A second video on “Litigation and Arbitration” was also produced for Minden Gross.

Shad Valley International

Safety First – Risk Management Training DVD

TCVP was hired by Shad Valley International (SVI) to create an engaging training video featuring world renowned volunteer management and risk management expert Linda Graff, delivering a live training workshop. The 2.5 hour DVD is now used every year by volunteers and employees across Canada. SVI is a four-week summer enrichment program offered to top high school students in Canada. Students spend a month living in residence at many Canadian host university campuses. Every year SVI employs many volunteers and leaders to administer and direct the students. By using this training DVD, SVI reduces its training costs and can now easily provide critical training to more employees and volunteers.

The video presents the workshop facilitator, Linda Graff, and was shot using multiple cameras. A very important component of the training session was the question and answer period. TCVP captured this natural discussion between the participants and the leader making viewers feel as though they are in the room with the group. The target audience is young people in their 20’s, and as such, the video starts with driving music matched with quick edits of candid shots of the participants to grab the viewers attention immediately. The DVD was divided into logical chapters, which allows the viewer to easily access a section to be reviewed.

Rotary International

Camp Enterprise – an educational business camp

in 2009, Rotary International Club of Toronto asked TCVP to create a video to be used as a recruitment tool for Camp Enterprise – an annual three-day business camp for high school students. The objective of the camp is to spur the students’ imaginations on the subject of business and private enterprise. TCVP tailored this promotional video to grades 11 and 12 students and, as such, the video is fast-paced, with many straight cuts.

We deliberately took many action and reaction shots, both indoors and outdoors, depicting the students learning, socializing, and most importantly, having fun. The shoot took place over 2 days on location in Nobleton. To suit the audience, it features a techno music track composed and arranged by Gilles. The video was distributed to Northern Toronto school teachers and was also posted on Camp Enterprise’s website. The year following the use of the video for promotional and recruitment purposes, Camp Enterprise was filled to capacity well before the start.

CAPPY - Ride Against Child Abuse - motorcycle

Community Child Abuse Council

Various Videos

CAPPY Ride 2011 – Child Abuse Prevention
and PROTECTION of Youth

The Community Child Abuse Council of Hamilton wanted a distinctive marketing vehicle for promoting their yearly fundraiser, the CAPPY Ride. During CAPPY Ride, good hearted motorcyclists spend the day riding a scenic route in southern Ontario to raise money and awareness of child abuse prevention. The 2011 CAPPY Ride marks their 20th Anniversary, so the Child Abuse Council wanted to make a big impact!

TCVP created a video to promote the significant 20th Anniversary ride. We had some dynamic photographs from previous years and so we decided that the video would be in the form of a fast paced photo montage. Keeping the target audience in consideration (motorcyclists ages 30 and up), hard-driving rock music was composed specifically for the video. Specialized treatment and effects were created to maximize the visual impact and the editing was cut to the driving beat of the music. The result? A dynamically charged 2-minute segment that engages your senses and creates an enthusiasm for the milestone fundraiser, all while elevating a strong message and cause.

The Wisdom Speakers Project

Inspirational Videos

The Wisdom Speakers is a public service website featuring the wisdom of ordinary extraordinary people. The website features video vignettes of interesting people that Gilles has crossed paths with in his travels.

When creating the videos, Gilles often looks for metaphors and other interesting ways of enhancing the mini-documentaries based on the information from the interviews. Each video is then artfully edited and features music from independent artists.

It was absolutely impressed by your ability to work so well with the seniors and with the children. You clearly just have one of those personalities that puts people at ease! Before you came to film the kids, they were all nervous about being taped, but within a minute in your presence, they seemed more excited than anything. I honestly couldn’t believe it.

Gilles made the entire process straightforward and enjoyable. Not only did he clearly explain the necessary elements that I would need to prepare for filming, but he also actively engaged with the seniors in a manner which is difficult for many people to do.

I just wanted compliment you on the video you did on Sharon and Houdini. It was brilliant. Loved the editing, the low camera angle shots and the way she comes out of the woods to begin and exits back into the woods at the end… nicely done. I especially love the last 5 seconds … it makes me laugh and I play that part over and over again for my own amusement.
